Most people will know the song Banana phone from the either the annoying ring tone ads or online flash movies. The origin of this unique piece of musically history comes from a children's album released in 1994 by the children's entertainer Raffi under the Rounder Records Label. This album was named Bananaphone and the title track provided the famous song. The song was penned by Raffi himself.
In the lyrics of the song Raffi explains the advantages of a Banana Phone which 'grows in bunches' and you 'don't need quarter, don't need dimes'. The song itself has developed into an faddish internet meme, and has appeared again in popular culture with it's first full commercial airing on John Warburton's breakfast show on the radio station 96.2 The Revolution.
The song has gained more notoriety by it's development into a ringtone, which has been available for purchase in the UK and Ireland through various ringtone providers. Bananaphone ad's have appeared (to the dismay of some viewers) on prominent TV channels, such as SKY. The song has been also developed into multiple online flash movies, mostly based on an animation by Dave Teatro which featured the song. Other notable version of the song are by Brian Hsu and one by Stephen Day which premiered at the Xanadu Film Festival in 2007.
